Finding Fizz, The first chapter
Sam had no idea how long he had been there; it could have been five minutes, it could have been his whole life. It was definitely peaceful, there was no disputing that, but the peace, the beauty, didn’t reach him. It was as if he had landed in paradise twenty seconds or twenty years ago, but his body was inside a bubble, and he would never know what it would feel like to breathe in this air, an air that skimmed in off the rainbow surface of the lake, which twisted and turned into the distance and a permanent, golden sunset. He knew it was permanent, as if the gods had spent an eternity selecting the most beautiful, compelling and affecting view of the sky to have descended over the world and cast a spell of solidity over it so the people of this strange land could always feel the emotions that it provoked – a deep sense of peace, satisfaction, comfort. Yes, everything would always be all right under this sun. But Sam felt immune in some way. He idly dipped a finger in the lake and when he pulled it out it was coated in every imaginable colour. At the same time, the far bank became home to an elegant, grazing creature whose mane reflected every one of those colours into the sky as its single horn glowed with a light so pure it could almost be heard. Sam wiped his finger, ran a hand through his golden curls and stood up. If he had been looking at the scene in a book in his homeland he would have been more affected by it than being here in person; he knew this. He knew that it was powerful and sensual and beyond the magic of anything he had seen in his life, but still it made no impact on his senses. A fog inside of him kept away the wonder of this world, and every enchantment caused his skin to buckle and churn with dread. If he didn’t get away from this place soon, it would surely make him ill.
